How to make a USB drive bootable

The following steps is required to make a USB drive a bootable drive and to copy a DVD / CD image on to it.  This is useful if you want to create a USB drive which you can use to install an OS such as Windows 7, or Windows 8.

I assume you use Windows as your existing operating system:

OPEN CMD (ADMIN) CTRL&SHIFT&ENTER
DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 1 (Replace “DISK 1″ with the disk your USB represent)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS quick
ASSIGN
EXIT

xcopy x:\*.* y:\ /e /f /h
where X = ISO Image of the CD / DVD, and Y = USB

There you go, no fancy software is needed.  Just make sure that when you select your USB drive (Select DISK 1) that you have selected the correct one before you enter “CLEAN”.  Then again, one way to ensure you will never forget to check that, is forget it… once….

ISO is the DVD / CD image that you have mounted using any of the tools available.

Short post, but I needed this info and wanted it quickly available on the web.  Enjoy it.
